Untethered IO builds augmented and mixed reality technology in a platform called Waterfall, which allows users to create 3D content they can experience in the real world. The platform was undergoing a major rebuild for v2.0 and the team needed help reimagining the user interface to allow for even greater freedom for users building content.
NBT's team was hired to design a mobile interface that leverages Untethered’s latest augmented reality (AR)
technology to provide a unique and engaging user experience while surfacing brand new control
mechanisms utilized on mobile devices.
NBT surveyed current and potential users of the Waterfall platform about AR technology, helping to lay out
directives for the design: Account heavily for users new to AR, Help users find their own way to utilize AR,
Build UI that grows with the user, starting simple but getting more complicated when needed, The resulting design took
these into account and suggested a greatly expanded interface with active guidance for new users.
Expandable controls and greater customization make it easier for users to adapt the app’s interface
to match their personal skill level. Finally, an emphasis on design that funnels users toward sharing their creations will do
more to supercharge the organic growth of the platform.
Incorporating both the knowledge gained from users and the UI/UX expertise offered by NBT has affected Untethered’s
roadmap heavily as they build the new version of their platform.
